Introduction

Health Big Data and Precision Medicine Era

The big data in health&medical field and implementation of precision medicine based on it are one of the most fundamental changes that alter
society and individuals lives. As our society is experiencing a radical aging and improvement in quality of life, health care is becoming more
important and big data-based precision medicine is expected to play a major role in health promotion. There are many examples of precision
medicine that are already applied in reality and it is spreading to various fields. In the past, allocating a uniform dose of prescription to patients
was common and only after side effects occurred, some measures were set up. However, some drugs have begun to tailor their capacity with
genetic testing. Even with the same cancer, the treatment performance can be improved by analyzing the cancer tissue and selecting different
targeted therapies for each person. In the past, if fetal abnormality is suspected, it was necessary to collect amniotic fluid from stomach with an
injection needle, but now through the DNA of the fetus mixed in the mother’s blood, the prenatal deformity test is performed without any damage
to the fetus. It is expected that these innovations will soon be expanded to health care promotion area, and also can recommend specific food,
exercises, and habits that suit you well. We focus our research on this field and want to contribute as well.

Genome Epidemiology?

Epidemiology is the study of distribution and determinants of health-related states and event for disease prevention and health promotion.
Genome epidemiology, in addition to classical factors in study of disease-health phenomena, can identify genetic and environmental factors
of disease and evaluate their interaction. These are key methodologies for understanding the risk of disease by personal genetic factors and
proposing a recommended life style for people with specific genetic susceptibility.

Big Data in Health & Medical Area

Big data should be large in capacity, and have a standardized system which can provide necessary information quickly. This is known as 3V
of big data; Volume, Variety and Velocity. If just big in size, it can be just a big nuisance. Combined data of personal health-clinical and genomic
information is a key point of big data in health & medical field. Moreover, the data should have information corresponding to “answer” in order
to be useful resources.

Key Capability for Genome Epidemiology and Big Data Based Research

Our lab is conducting education and research with the core competencies of these studies. It covers the following studies :

  • Epidemiology and Health Sciences : Basic theory of health promotion and finding cause of diseases with population-based techniques.
  • Bioinfomatics : Analytic skills and programming capabilities to extract information and knowledge from data.
  • Genomics : Genetics and human genetics, theory and practice of omics analysis.
  • Statistics and Visualization : Logical association test ability and data visualization.
  • Practicalizing : Competence for practical use, securing intellectual property rights, communication
